Clients travelling to Cairns for medical appointments are invited to use Apunipima’s Client Transport Service. The free, seven day a week service ensures you are collected from the airport, taken to your accommodation and appointments and dropped back to the airport at the end of your stay in Cairns.
Coming to Cairns
The first step is to talk to your health centre about arranging accommodation, travel and appointments through the Community PTS (Patient Travel Service). They will talk to you about your options and help you work through your plans. If you are flying to Cairns our Client Transport Service can pick you up from the airport and take you to your accommodation and to your medical appointments. Your community Patient Travel Service person will forward your details to Apunipima before you arrive and we will make sure the driver is there to pick you up.
At the Airport
The driver will be waiting in the airport near the luggage carousels and will be wearing the Apunipima orange shirt. Our driver will give you a food pack and a bottle of water.
The bus is fitted out with a wheelchair ramp and steps to assist those of us who need a little help. The bus also has a baby capsule and a child booster seat. On arrival we provide a small breakfast pack and bottled water.
On the day of your appointments the driver will pick you up from where you are staying half an hour before you are due to meet with your specialist.
Your Apunipima staff member or Cairns Hospital Liaison Officer will be at your appointment and will introduce you to your specialist.
Your specialist will talk to you about what the next steps are and will also let your doctor back at the clinic know.
After your appointment we or your Cairns Hospital Liaison Officer will contact our driver and take you back to your accommodation or if you’re flying home, will take you to the airport.
Your appointment can feel like it goes fast and you may have questions when you get home. Feel free to drop into your community clinic and talk to them about your questions and concerns.
