A Collaborative Approach!

Collaborative approach websmlApunipima, Queensland Health and Royal Flying Doctor Service have been working together to promote good health and wellbeing for women during October Breast Awareness month in Pormpuraaw.

Fiona Millard Health Promotion Officer said “Breast awareness month gives us the opportunity to not only remind women to check their breast monthly , but also to discuss other women's health issues including regular women's health checks, eating well and exercising.”

“It was great having Neil Kaigey our Tackling Indigenous Smoking Officer available to also share information about the effects of smoking" she said.

Aunty Kathy from Pormpuraaw shared her stories about smoking and why she gave up, "I wanted to give up for my grandchildren and make sure I was around to see them grow up and I also wanted to be a good role model to them.”

“I wake up in the morning and feel fresh and healthy.  I like feeling good.  I encourage my brothers and sisters to go and see the doctor, plenty time for check-up" she said.

As part of creating awareness and engaging women in the community, free bras were available to the Pormpuraaw women to take home.  Special thank you to those friends who donated their pre loved bras.
