Why prevention matters in Cape York
Cape York communities experience some of the highest health risks in Australia. Preventable conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease and heart disease are far more common in remote Cape York than they are in urban areas, and much of the work performed clinically at Apunipima goes into early detection, treatment and prevention of these types of health conditions.
Health Checks, Health Checks, Health Checks!
The “715 Indigenous Health Check” is the number one thing our people can do to look after their long term health. A health check will catch any risk factors or early signs of disease through some simple questions and tests. We test for things like high blood sugar and high blood pressure and ask about things like diet, exercise and smoking to see what health risks may be just around the corner, and help plan so that they don’t develop.
715 Health Checks are quick and easy and should be performed each year and are available for children, women and men of all ages.
Visiting clinics
Where we have funding available, Apunipima coordinates specialised chronic disease clinics to visit our communities and helps our community people to attend, particularly where we have previously identified risk factors during 715 health checks. These clinics offer targeted treating services such as foot health, ear health and heart and lung health; vital for detecting cardiovascular disease or risk, such as Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF), and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD).
Immunisations and Vaccinations
Apunipima offers Immunisations and Vaccinations to our community members to help prevent against common preventable conditions, all fully covered by Medicare. These include:
- Childhood immunisations
- Booster immunisations
- Flu (Infuenza) vaccination
- Covid-19 vaccination
- Overseas travel related vaccination.
