Why use Telehealth?

Telehealth bridges the gap for remote Cape York communities, reducing travel barriers and improving timely access to care. Telehealth uses technology such as a video call or phone call to provide healthcare services remotely, enabling Apunipima to offer increased access to see a General Practitioner (GP) or other health practitioner.

Apunipima uses industry standard video conferencing technology to privately and securely provide consultations from within our Primary Health Care Centres. All telehealth services are bulk-billed under Medicare.

Health Worker Assisted General Practitioner (GP) Consultations

Consultations are culturally safe and health worker-assisted, ensuring clients feel supported during remote sessions. A health worker can assist during the consultation to help you feel more comfortable, explain some things the doctor may be talking about, and to assist with general medical observations or tests which may be required during the consultation. These consultations may be related to:

  • General Practitioner (GP) consultations
  • Chronic disease management
  • Child, maternal and family health support
  • Mental health and wellbeing sessions
  • Specialist referrals

Podiatry Telehealth Service

A newer initiative, the Podiatry Telehealth Service connects Cape York patients with podiatry specialists remotely, improving access particularly for diabetes-related foot care and other conditions. Our health workers have been supported with foot health-specific training, ensuring they can offer patients the support they need with foot health during the consultation, and during follow-up appointments.
