Apunipima staff joined other agencies and community groups to celebrate Youth Week with the children of Napranum.

Youth Week activities and events were held across Queensland for the first time from the 6th to 15th April. The purpose of Youth Week was to celebrate the achievements, vitality and strength of young Queenslanders aged 12 to 25.  The theme of the week was Jump in. Make a splash.

The Youth Week activities in Napranum were held at the local PCYC in conjunction with My Pathway, Queensland Police Service, Rio Tinto and Apunipima Cape York Health Council.

Apunipima’s Health Promotion Officer Andrew Packer and Tackling Indigenous Smoking Health Worker Josh Mene used the week long activities as an opportunity to promote Apunipima’s Social Marketing Campaigns, “Don’t Make Smokes Your Story” and “Sugary Drinks Proper No Good – Drink More Water Youfla.”

Each day more than 70 children participated in games, activities and interactive education displays that have been developed by Apunipima Cape York Health Council in partnership with the communities of Cape York to share key health messages for the Tackling Indigenous Smoking and Healthy Communities projects.

Tackling Indigenous Smoking Health Worker, Josh Mene said it was great to see so many children and how receptive they were to the health messages we were sharing.

Apunipima served a healthy lunch for the kids on Wednesday. “We served up a delicious pasta salad that the kids really enjoyed and of course made sure that there was plenty of cold water throughout the week.” Andrew added.

Leisa Lindsay the Youth Engagement Officer for My Pathway was a key coordinator for the week long event and looks forward to working with Apunipima on similar events in the future.
