Over 30 years of Cape York Health
Established in 1994, Apunipima Cape York Health Council has grown from a small advocacy body in our early years, into a large community-controlled organisation delivering health and wellbeing services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Cape York. This evolution is a result of the vision and tenacity of our community elected board members and dedicated workforce who strive to deliver real health outcomes for the people of Cape York.
Community Led
In health, community control is a process which allows local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to be actively involved in health matters affecting their community. Apunipima is one of 146 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) nationwide. For Apunipima, community control is enabled through our Board of Directors – representatives from each of Apunipima’s five (5) Regions in Cape York, and our Health Action Teams (HATs) – community-based members who provide guidance and advice to enable us to respond to the health needs of their community.
Delivering Culturally Safe Care
Apunipima is the leader in delivering culturally safe health and wellbeing services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Cape York. Where we provide clinical care, our health worker-led model puts Aboriginal Health Workers at the centre of the patient journey, ensuring culturally appropriate care can be provided to Apunipima clients visiting our Primary Health Care Centres.
Our Communities
Apunipima Cape York Health Council represents and advocates for 17 remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Cape York. We deliver comprehensive primary health care in 6 communities through our Primary Health Care Centres, provide holistic wellbeing services in 4 communities via our Wellbeing Centres, and offer visiting outreach and non-clinical care to 11 communities to ensure access to culturally safe health support across the region (excluding the NPA region).
