Grassroots Community Governance
Apunipima’s Health Action Teams (HATs) are a vital part of our commitment to community-controlled healthcare. Each Cape York community has its own HAT, whose primary role is to provide advice, guidance and support in the planning, development and delivery of health and wellbeing services in their community. The HATs enable Apunipima to ensure that our programs and services are culturally safe and locally responsive to the health and wellbeing needs of their communities.
What Are Health Action Teams?
Health Action Teams (HATs) are made up of local Apunipima members who support Apunipima to identify health issues and priorities, develop community health plans and collaborate with Apunipima to improve health outcomes within their communities. Each Cape York community has its own HAT, whose role includes providing culturally sound advice and information to support Apunipima operations in their communities.
The benefts of Health Action Teams
Community-Led Health Planning
HATs play a key role in supporting the development of Community Health Plans—strategic documents that guide the delivery of services based on local priorities. These plans are created in partnership with health professionals and ensure that care is tailored to each community’s needs.
Guiding Culturally Safe Services
By working closely with Apunipima staff, HATs help shape service delivery by providing advice and guidance to ensure our services are culturally appropriate and respectful of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditions and values.
Supporting Community Engagement
HATs support Apunipima with the coordinate of community events, health promotion activities and partnerships with local councils, aged care services, and homeland communities.
A Strong Voice for Change
As advocates for their communities, HATs are instrumental in influencing Apunipima’s service design and delivery. Their insights and leadership help Apunipima remain responsive, inclusive, and accountable to the people it serves.
