It is used when someone has a sudden cardiac arrest. This is when the heart suddenly stops pumping. The defibrillator analyses the heart rhythm and decides whether an electric shock is needed.
Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are found in public places and can be used by anybody in an emergency. They guide you through each step of the process.
This year Apunipima Cape York Health Council have purchased AEDs for all our centres.
Craig Blackburn, Primary Health Care Educator, has been personally delivering the AEDs to all our Primary Health Care Centres (PHCC) and Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Centres as well as providing instruction on their use.
